The Tradition
Pattachitra is one of India's oldest living painting traditions, nurtured for more than eight centuries in the temple town of Puri, in the eastern state of Odisha. Its name joins two Sanskrit words, patta, meaning cloth, and chitra, meaning picture.
On a canvas of cloth stiffened with tamarind paste and chalk, hereditary artisans called chitrakars paint scenes from mythology and folklore in natural pigments ground from minerals, shells, and soot, finishing each piece with fine lines of gold. The craft is handed down within families, one generation teaching the next.
The First Collection
Our opening pieces come from Odisha's centuries-old Pattachitra tradition, painted by hand, in natural pigment and gold, on cloth and wood.
